The Importance of Food and Water Storage

The Importance of Food and Water Storage

Article by Tim James

Food storage can save you and your family in a crisis, but many of us never actually get around to stocking up the food reserves that will carry us through difficult times. And those who actually do have some type of food storage often make some mistakes that can make the whole effort pointless. The good news is that most of these mistakes are easy to avoid.

One of the most common mistakes is the usage of containers that are not up to the task. If you expect your food storage to last, the containers will have to be extremely reliable. This means you will have to use the right food grade containers for everything, whether the food will be in 5 gallon buckets or Mylar bags.

Many people also keep their food storage in the wrong place. When you put away this large amount of food, it needs to be in a cool, dry place that is out of direct sunlight and can maintain a constant temperature. This location should also be convenient. If it is easy to get to, you are more likely to rotate it properly.

Food rotation is another important step, but so many people often forget it. Make sure that you use the food you have in storage and then immediately replace it. This way you can catch any problems like deterioration or spoilage in the food or the containers.

One other problem is the simple lack of variety. Many people believe that a lot of canned goods will be enough for them. It is a lot better, though, if you include a variety of goods such as things that are quick and easy to access and eat as well as the canned and home foods.

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes, though, is the lack of proper water storage or a filtration system. Water storage is critical because we need it to drink as well as reconstitute some of the foods we have in storage. It is suggested that we keep at least two weeks worth of water or a good filtration system on hand.

Finally, one mistake that should be avoided is the lack of sufficient cooking and preparation equipment. Most of the stuff in a food storage isn’t immediately edible, and you will need some tools to cook or reconstitute it all. If you want to make everything edible, this is something you shouldn’t forget.

Food and water storage is simply a good idea. We never know when a crisis might happen, and if you avoid these mistakes you will be sure to have the reserves you need in those situations.

Noreen’s Kitchen: Pumpkin Pancakes from Food Storage

Greetings! Let’s make some pumpkin pancakes! I know that this looks really simple. I also know that we are using a mix. But for your money, I just don’t see why we shouldn’t use the big bag of pancake mix. I believe that mixes like this are nothing more than pre measured ingredients. I cannot make a bag this size from my own preps for .00. I also cannot make cake mixes for 98 cents from my preps. So I just think that sometimes it is alright to use these convenience items because they have what I would put in them anyway. Now, on to the pancakes. We have added some of our home prepared pumpkin from last fall to this mix along with enough water to make a pourable batter. Then proceed as usual for making pancakes and you will be so happy you did. These were delicious! Variations on this batter would be banana pancakes subbing bananas for the pumpkin. You could add mini chocolate chips or chopped pecans or both to each cake just before flipping and have a serious breakfast treat. The sky’s the limit and you could make these to suit your own family. I hope that this inspires you and gets you to try something new in your own kitchen. I hope you try this and I hope you enjoy it. As always Happy Eating!

Survival Foods For Hikers

Survival Foods For Hikers

Article by Steve Gillman

Survival foods are not the most important thing in most emergency situations in the wilderness. You survive weeks without eating if you have to, so it is usually more important to find shelter, water, and stay dry and uninjured. On the other hand, just knowing you can find food out there, and having something in your stomach, can do wonders for your state of mind, which CAN be crucial to your survival.

What then, do you need to know about survival foods? First forget the idea that you need to learn every last edible wild plant. I love learning about new edible plants, but very few of them provide enough calories to be worth the effort in a survival situation. What you need s to know a few basic categories of animals you can eat, and some of the most abundant and calorie-rich plants.

Survival Foods – The Animals

Mammals in North America can all be eaten (except for the livers of some arctic mammals). Since many carry parasites, wash your hands after handling them, and cook the meat if possible.

North American birds are all edible, and there eggs are too. I’ve even eaten seagull eggs cooked on a hot rock, and they tasted fine.

Fresh water fish in North America are all edible. Catching the fish is the difficult part, but they can be quickly and easily cooked over a fire.

Amphibians and reptiles are usually safe to eat – if you remove the skin. I have cooked snake in a stew and over a fire, and I recommend the latter.

Survival Foods – The Plants

Cattail is one of the most abundant and calorie-rich foods in the wilderness. The white part of the stalk at the bottom, and the new shoots, can be eaten raw or cooked. Flower spikes can be cooked like corn-on-the-cob when green. Roots can be mashed in water to release the starch, which can be added to soups. Pollen from the flower spike can be shaken into a bag and used in soups. Cattails grow in swamps or wet soil, and you really should get to know this plant.

The inner bark of pine trees is edible. It’s a good survival food to remember, because it is available year-round. That white spongy layer between the outer bark and the wood is what you want. Although it is mostly fiber, it contains enough carbohydrates to be worth boiling into a soup if nothing else is available.

Edible berries can be a delicious and filling survival food in the right season. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, and blackberries all have their wild forms. If it looks like the domestic one (usually smaller) and smells and tastes like it, it’s safe to eat.

Of course it’s fun to know which mushrooms you can eat, and even which flowers are edible, but both of these have almost no calories. To quickly learn what you need to survive, concentrate first on the common animals and the most abundant and calorie-rich edible plants. Those are the survival foods that will most likely save your life.

Save Food and Money with Survival Food Storage

Save Food and Money with Survival Food Storage

Article by Nicole Roberts

In today’s hard economic times, saving as much money as possible is extremely important. Survival food storage can save both food and money. One of the biggest expenses people face today is buying groceries. When you are on a tight budget, buying enough food can be a challenge. While you can’t reduce your grocery bill by cutting out meals, you can make your food last longer and save money in the long run with effective food storage. In addition to saving money, by keeping your food safe, you can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria that can cause dangerous food-borne illnesses.

The first rule of survival food storage is buying perishable items last and placing them into your refrigerator as soon as you get home. This will help prevent any spoilage. When buying perishable foods, only buy quantities you know you’ll be able to eat. One of the most common mistakes people make when food shopping is buying too many items. Plan your meals ahead of time and calculate exactly how much food you’ll need to get. Keeping track of everything will help you save money since you won’t end up throwing out any food that you didn’t have time to eat.

The next step in survival food storage is monitoring your refrigerator. Most people don’t pay attention to the settings in their refrigerators, which is a mistake. Proper refrigeration is the most important part of food storage. The inside of your refrigerator should always be 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Sometimes different parts of the refrigerator have different temperatures. You can use a thermometer to monitor them to make sure all areas remain at the right temperature.

When putting items in the freezer, use moisture-proof wraps or put them into containers. Otherwise, your food might get freezer burn, and you might have to throw it out, which can waste a lot of money. To control bacteria, thaw frozen foods inside your refrigerator.

The pantry also plays an important role in safe food storage. It should always be cool, dark, and dry. While items that can be stored in the pantry typically have a much longer shelf life, they still need to be kept in the right environment. The pantry should always be between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. All food should be stored in glass, metal, or plastic containers. Always check labels and expiration dates before eating any of the foods you store in your pantry.

Survival food storage is a great way to save both food and money. Because saving food means you won’t have to buy it as often, you can save a lot of money by following simple food storage tips. Only buy items that you know you’ll have time to eat, store perishable foods in your refrigerator at the right temperature, and keep your pantry organized.

Post-Holiday Food Storage Tips

Post-Holiday Food Storage Tips

Article by Steven Chang

Many families look forward to cooking well-loved family recipes through the holidays. After all it is that time of the year, when many individuals even journey miles just to be with loved ones. While the holidays may be a good time to display your culinary skills, correct food storage should be observed in order to prevent food-borne illnesses.

Little amounts of bacteria can naturally be seen in foods. Even so, poor handling, improper cooking and storage can allow the bacteria to multiply, that can then lead to disease. Aside from bacteria, parasites, toxins, viruses, and chemicals can additionally cause contamination.

Individuals who ingested these infectious organisms may have varied complaints. This is owing to the fact that the symptoms of food poisoning vary, depending on the source of contamination. The common problems are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain, which start hours after eating contaminated food.

One of the best ways to decrease the chance of food-borne illnesses is by proper food storage. Meals which need to be refrigerated ought to be put inside the fridge the minute you get home. There is actually a “two hour rule” in which you need to get seafood, poultry, meats, eggs, or other produce inside the refrigerator. These food items should not be allowed to sit for more than two hours at room temperature. If the temperature is over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, these food items should not be allowed to sit at room temperature for over an hour or so. Refrigerator temperature must additionally be maintained at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Likewise, the temperature inside the freezer should be at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. It may be great to purchase refrigerator and freezer thermometers. These are usually cheap, and should be placed inside the refrigerator and the freezer. Check temperatures at least once weekly to guarantee safe food storage.

If it could take some time for you to get the groceries home, use an ice chest for temporary keeping frozen and perishable goods. When the climate is warm, do not place your groceries in the trunk. Instead, place them inside the passenger compartment due to the fact it is usually cooler due to the air conditioner.

Make it a habit to read labels concerning storage instructions and expiration dates. If you have forgotten to keep some food items inside the fridge, it may be very best to toss them away. Some refrigerated ready to eat food items, must also be consumed as soon as possible simply because there is a higher chance of bacteria to grow. It can particularly occur if the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit inside the fridge.

The refrigerator should also be cleaned frequently. Spills should be quickly cleaned to reduce the development of bacteria. Foods stored in the fridge should additionally be covered to stop contamination. Throw away food items which look suspicious or moldy. Marinate food inside the refrigerator because bacteria can multiply rapidly at room temperature. The marinating liquid must never be reused if it has not been boiled. Leftovers should also be stored in tight lid containers.

Meals which are appropriately handled and stored in the freezer are normally safe. Freezing will not kill most bacteria but it can stop bacterial growth. Freezing could also not minimize a nutritional value of a food item. However, food items that have been kept for a long period of time may have an effect on a food’s aroma, tenderness, juiciness, and color.

Routinely check your stocked canned items for damage. Throw cans that have swelled and rusted extensively. Throw away also cans with leakage, holes, punctures, and those which have been severely dented. Do not keep food items close to chemicals and any cleaning products. It is also not wise to store food items under the sink because a leak from the pipes may result in contamination. It is advisable to store food items in a cool, dry place in order to decrease the chance of bacteria growth.

Individuals may take for granted proper food storage because it has been part of our routine every time we go grocery shopping. However, proper food storage is one way of protecting your loved ones from food-borne illnesses. Storing food properly will not take a lot of your time, but it is the best way to guarantee safety for your whole family. Far more importantly, proper food storage should not only be observed during the holidays, but throughout the year as well.
